Thanks to cheap flights, almost anyone can fly

Just two decades ago many family vacations were limited because most could only afford to go as far as they could drive. Gas prices in most places were less than $1 a gallon. If a family had the time, it was often cheaper to drive across the country than to fly.
But in the mid-90s, several new airlines emerged offering cheap flights. Thanks to those airlines, the family vacation was changed. ValueJet, now known as AirTran, was one of the first to offer low-cost airfare when it opened in 1993. Headquartered in Atlanta, southern families who used to drive to Florida were able to fly cheaper and have more time to enjoy the sunshine state. Special weekend rates were offered for those who wanted a quick getaway.
In the latter part of the 90s, other low-price airlines emerged. Along with AirTran JetBlue in the northeast and Frontier Airlines, with headquarters in Indianapolis and Denver, became the airline of choice for businesses and individuals on a budget.
With the news that Southwest Airlines has purchased AirTran, many frequent fliers fear that the prices will increase. However, the merger will not take place for another two years. Ironically, Southwest embarked on an aggressive marketing campaign touting its savings to fliers because they don’t charge additional baggage fees, as many airlines, including AirTran, does. It will be interesting to see how the merger affects the costs of flights.
Of course, there are many airlines to choose from, with the UK and European industries booming and companies like Ryanair and Flybe coming to the fore over the older more established big hitters.
